Massacre Bay

On Saturday, a group of us decided to go for a hike. Even though it does not have the best name, we thought the hike to Massacre Bay would be fun. It was suppose to have a nice beach and a monument commemorating the death of a bunch of Frenchmen who died there. Back in 1787, the french visited Am Sam. As they were leaving, they angered the Samoans - not a smart idea. Angry Samoans are not fun people - and the Samoans took out 12 crew members - hence the monument and the name of the Bay. The French killed 39 Samoans, but they don't get a monument. Life is unfair. Once we found the trail head, we started our hike. The warning sign concerned us for a second. The hike down was not that bad - a little muddy and mostly downhill. Markus cut us a path, but Bonnie got the prize for walking the trail down in bare feet. That is one tough lady. It took about an hour and thirty minutes to get to the beach. Any pain from the hike disappeared as soon as we hit the beach. It was a great one.We spent a couple of hours on the beach, and visited the monument. The start of the hike back was a little hard, cause the trail can be confusing - can you find it?Luckily Liz and Markus had marked the trail on the way down, so our confusion only lasted a few minutes. The hike up was not as bad as I thought, but near the end, we wondered when it was going to end - we just kept going and going. We reached the end and had some great views of the island - and a really cool breeze. awesome. I think everyone enjoyed themselves - except maybe Don - I think we wore him out.

OMG. seeing these pics brought tears to my eyes. My mother, whom just recently passed, use to tell me stories of how she grew up down there in Massacre Bay (A'asu-tuai), before they had to move up into the mountains after the hurricane. Thank you ssooo much for sharing.

Wow thank you so much for posting the pictures. It brings me back so much memory. I live with my parents in Massacre bay when I was a very young girl. My family mostly live up in the new part of Aasu but my parents preferred to stay down the bay. It was so beautiful I still remember it even now after all these years. When I lived there alot of people live there during those times but the only means of transportation was by boat. My father and mother would of love to see the pictures again thank you.

My family is from A'asu-tuai. My great grandmother To'atasi's house is the only house still standing on the beach. She passed away in 1992 the year i was born so i was given her name. She, her husband and some of my family members are still burried in the front of our house. My family still goes down there to fish and to just hang out. We are slowly fixing it up so that we can stay down there if we wanted to. while i was in samoa in 2010 we spent a weekend down there. it was beautiful besides when all the frogs came out at night.

Does one have to ask permission to go everywhere in the world that isnt private property? What are you trying to do - emulate the westerners you're supposedly better than? Let's leave paradise as paradise, enough of the world is ruined by inhospitability already.

There was a reason the Samoans attacked the French. It was not an unprovoked attach as you suggest. The French killed a Samoan child as punishment for taking a French object.

Aasu at Massacre Bay is no longer abandoned, there are two people that live there. James and Maria have been there since the end of 2010. Maria was born there and her husband James is from Pittsburgh Pa. They have been cleaning and planting in the village. The trail would be a lot different than when you guys have been there. The trail has been cleaned up for there travel as well as welcomed visitors that would like to take the hike.

Very cool post. I was there in August 2019 and yes it is private property even thought it is a National Historic Place. There was not a sign like the one you have posted. I was with a bunch of Samoans but we still got in trouble for trespassing, although the owners came down and brought us soft drinks. Long story short, someone injured their ankle and technically we were trespassing so the police told us we all had to return by boat, which was awesome. One of those days you couldn't have planned.
